3+2 Psychology BA/MSW or BS/MSW

3+2 PSYCHOLOGY/MS SOCIAL WORK ARTICULATION WITH UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO

Student majoring in Psychology may choose to accelerate their professional preparation by applying for admission the Master of Social Work (MSW) program at the University at Buffalo before completing their undergraduate degree. Social Work is a challenging field that applies psychology theories and methods to the practical needs of people in our community. The 3+2 program reduces the time needed to complete the two degrees by one year without sacrificing the academic quality and liberal arts core of a Canisius University education; courses from the first year in the MSW program count as the student’s fourth year free electives at Canisius University. Interested students must meet with their Psychology department advisor to plan their courses and to ensure that they are fulfilling all MSW admission requirements. Eligibility will be determined by October 1 of the year preceding entry into the MSW program, and the student must then apply separately to the University at Buffalo program. Admission is contingent upon meeting

Curriculum

An Ignatian Foundation

All undergraduate students must complete either the Canisius Core Curriculum or the All-College Honors Curriculum. Many schools refer to their college-wide undergraduate requirements as "general education" requirements. We believe that the core curriculum and the honors curriculum are more than a series of required classes; they provide the basis for a Jesuit education both with content and with required knowledge and skills attributes that are central to our mission.

Free Electives

Students may graduate with a bachelor's degree with more but not less than 120 credit hours. Free electives are courses in addition to the Canisius Core Curriculum or All-College Honors Curriculum and major requirements sufficient to reach the minimum number of credits required for graduation. The number of credits required to complete a bachelor's degree may vary depending on the student's major(s) and minor(s).

Major Requirements

  • Ninety (90) credit hours must be completed at Canisius University, including all major course required for the BA or BS in Psychology. Eligible students must meet these criteria:
  • Twenty four (24) liberal arts credit hours (6 credit hours in social or behavioral sciences, 6 credit hours in the arts or humanities, 12 credit hours in any liberal arts disciplines, included the first two categories listed here).
  • All Core Curriculum course requirements
  • BIO 114—human biology
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher (preferred)
  • Volunteer and/or internship activities
  • The University at Buffalo ensures that its own degree requirements for the MSW program are met.
